Catholic High School Students Honored
with Superintendent's Summa Scholar Award

Bloomfield, Conn. – (April 25, 2012) Twenty-three students from the four Archdiocesan Catholic High Schools will be honored with the Superintendent’s Summa Scholar Award, an award recognizing superior academic performance.  A special ceremony will take place on Monday, April 30, 2012 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas Seminary, 467 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield.

The Summa Scholar Award provides an opportunity for Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dale R. Hoyt, to personally recognize students from Northwest Catholic, Saint Paul Catholic, Sacred Heart, and East Catholic High Schools who have achieved academic excellence, as well as the Catholic school teachers they identify as having been most influential to their success.

To qualify for a Summa Scholar honor, a student must have, at minimum, an overall 4.3 grade point average, or a 98% average for grades 9 through the first two quarters of grade 12.  Each student then selects one teacher from either a Catholic elementary or secondary school to be recognized for having dedicated his or her life to Catholic education and for making a significant impression on the student’s exceptional academic accomplishments.

Each student Summa Scholar will receive a bronze medallion engraved with the crest of the Archdiocese and the prayer, “May you find truth through faith, knowledge, and wisdom.”  The students will then present certificates of recognition to their mentor teacher.

Superintendent Dale R. Hoyt has invited Dr. Pamela Reid, President of Saint Joseph College, to give a brief address at the April ceremony, offering hope and encouragement to the students as they move forward into higher education.  Other distinguished guests participating in the upcoming ceremony include Fr. Mark Jette, Pastor, St Lawrence Parish and the 2011-2012 Archdiocesan Distinguished Elementary School Pastor, and Maria Maynard, Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Hoyt established the Superintendent’s Summa Scholar Award in 2011 in order to applaud the excellence found in Catholic school education.  “This type of recognition acknowledges the academic distinction that is the hallmark of our schools and gives us the opportunity to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of both students and faculty.  Along with the parents and guardians of our student honorees, we take great pride in their superlative academic performance which we know will lead them to futures bright with promise, and as the Summa Scholars express their appreciation for their mentor teachers, the exceptional dedication of these fine educators is showcased in a very moving way.  It is a truly inspiring event.”
